Skilled Worker Visa – Work in the UK with Employer Sponsorship
The Skilled Worker Visa allows overseas professionals to live and work in the UK in an eligible role with a licensed employer sponsor. Who Can Apply?
You may be eligible for a Skilled Worker Visa if you:
- Have a confirmed job offer from a UK employer licensed to sponsor workers
- Will be working in an eligible occupation listed by the Home Office
- Will be paid at or above the required salary threshold
- Meet the English language requirement
- Are applying for a role that meets the skill level and sponsorship conditions under the visa route
Key Requirements
Job Offer from a Licensed Sponsor
- The employer must hold a valid Sponsor Licence
- You must receive a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from your employer outlining the job details
Eligible Occupation and Salary
- The job must appear on the list of eligible occupations
- As of April 2024, most roles must meet a general salary threshold of £38,700 per year, or £15.88/hour
- Lower salary thresholds may apply for shortage occupations, new entrants, healthcare and education roles
English Language Requirement
- You must prove English proficiency to CEFR level B1 (e.g. IELTS for UKVI or equivalent)
- Exemptions apply if you have a degree taught in English or are from a majority English-speaking country
Financial Requirement
- You must have at least £1,270 in savings unless your employer certifies your maintenance on the CoS
- Funds must have been held for 28 consecutive days before applying
Application Fee and Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)
- Application fee varies from £719–£1,500, depending on the length of stay and whether the job is on the shortage list
- Immigration Health Surcharge is £1,035 per year
Visa Duration and Path to Settlement
- The visa is granted for up to 5 years, and can be extended
- After 5 continuous years, you may be eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
- You can bring dependants (partner and children)
- Visa holders can work only for the sponsoring employer unless a change is approved
