Parent Visa – Join or Stay with Your British Child in the UK
If you are the parent of a British child or a child who is settled in the UK, you may be eligible to apply for a Family Visa to live with them and take an active role in their upbringing.
Who Can Apply?
You can apply if:
- Your child is under 18, lives in the UK, and is either:
- A British citizen
- Settled in the UK (e.g. with Indefinite Leave to Remain or Settled Status)
- You have parental responsibility or direct involvement in their care
- You are either the sole carer, or share caring responsibilities with the child’s other parent or guardian who is a British citizen or settled in the UK
- You intend to continue playing an active role in the child’s life
Requirements
To qualify, you must:
- Prove your relationship with the child through birth certificates or court orders
- Demonstrate that you are genuinely involved in their upbringing
- Meet the English language requirement (CEFR A1 or above)
- Prove you can adequately support yourself without public funds (unless exempt)
Visa Conditions
- Visas are usually granted for 2 years and 9 months
- You may apply to extend and later apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain
- Work is allowed under this route
- You may not qualify for this visa if you are eligible to apply as a partner instead
