Family immigration- parent

If you are the parent of a British child or a child who is settled in the UK, you may be eligible to apply for a Family Visa to live with them and take an active role in their upbringing.

You can apply if:

• Your child is under 18, lives in the UK, and is either:
  • A British citizen
  • Settled in the UK (e.g. with Indefinite Leave to Remain or Settled Status)
• You have parental responsibility or direct involvement in their care
• You are either the sole carer, or share caring responsibilities with the child’s other parent or guardian who is a British citizen or settled in the UK
• You intend to continue playing an active role in the child’s life

To qualify, you must:

• Prove your relationship with the child through birth certificates or court orders
• Demonstrate that you are genuinely involved in their upbringing
• Meet the English language requirement (CEFR A1 or above)
• Prove you can adequately support yourself without public funds (unless exempt)

• Visas are usually granted for 2 years and 9 months
• You may apply to extend and later apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain
• Work is allowed under this route
• You may not qualify for this visa if you are eligible to apply as a partner instead
